"Echoes of Communication: Conversations Between Sahit and Srikar"
Introduction: Sahit, relying on pointing and spelling due to verbal limitations, contrasts with Srikar, who communicates through speech but is finding his inner voice by spelling for enhanced reliability. Their dialogue offers insights and guidance for others navigating similar challenges.
Session 1: Reflecting on Peace and Understanding
Siri: Introduction
Siri: How would you both start the conversation? Would you like to talk about yourself?
Opening Thoughts on Peace
Sahit: This world is a peace haven?
Srikar: This is amazing to think about the work we need to do to make the world a peace haven.
Siri: Which world are you talking about?
Defining Their Worlds
Sahit: The world that we experience every second in our special framework.
Srikar: This world we live in isn’t peaceful. The challenges aren’t easy to find the peace in my world.
Finding Joy in Challenges
Sahit: That’s true about working hard to find peace but we have to be merry with everything we experience.
Srikar: It’s a practice brother to make things merry for me.
Acknowledging Progress
Sahit: The practice is beginning to happen when you acknowledge the gift you have.
Srikar: The time I spell, I experience the self within me. I am practicing to be merrier within me.
Reflecting on the Conversation
Siri: How are you feeling about this conversation that you are having with Sahit?
Srikar: This is my first meaningful conversation with a person who can understand myself.
Siri: What do you mean by understanding yourself? As we have been exploring the spelling technique and you have been conversating with me and your family?
Srikar: My brother from the spectrum. This makes me emotionally connected to Sahit Anna.
Session 2: Addressing Habits and School Challenges
Siri: Introduction
Siri: We ended our session yesterday talking about your worlds. How would you like to start today’s conversation?
Managing Impulsive and Obsessive Habits
Srikar: How do you cope up with the impulsive and obsessive habits.
Sahit: The triggers have to be communicated to help with the impulsive behavior. Coming to habits, we have to find distractions to minimize the obsessive habits.
Siri: The habit of finishing a leftover as soon as possible is a habit that you are struggling, how can we know more about the triggers to help you with getting rid of impulsive or obsessive habits?
Developing a Strategy
Srikar: The finishing habit is not helping me either. The trigger is visual and the concurrent time that connects the habit, which disturbs the whole mood. This is the best thing to say about my idea from many years. Let’s start a leftover routine in a week or in two weeks. Then it’s my job to clear the leftovers and you choose the items. Refilling them at a different time will help my behavior not escalating to frustration.
Siri: Thank you for giving a plan that you have communicated. I am glad to know it’s an idea that’s cooking inside you for a long time.
Addressing School Concerns
Siri: Mom was talking about Srikar using the hand sanitizers excessively at school which has made his palm very rough.
Siri: How can we communicate with the school regarding controlling the hand sanitizer use.
Srikar: Then start labeling the station with a red sticker then I will not use that station but it’s a practice.
Transition to School
Srikar: Going to school, how do you feel Sahit?
Sahit: It’s not easy to wake up early but I love my teachers and my worksites.
Siri: How do you like your school Srikar?
Srikar: I am ready to show the school who is Srikar, And tell them that I am growing to get my diploma in this school.
